Time to Fill Up!

Dr. Sharon Gertzman

As we age, we lose volume in our faces: under our eyes, in our cheeks and in our jawline. Unfortunately, we still have the same amount of skin, so without the volume of youth, our faces deflate like a balloon, this leaves us with sagging skin that ages us and makes us appear tired or unhappy or even angry.
We find that this time of year a lot of our patients choose to treat themselves to a dermal filler procedure. What I love about fillers is they give you that instant gratification that so few cosmetic
treatments do. With no recovery time at all and the biggest risk being a bruise (that heals quickly) you can instantly look 10 to 15 years younger. Without a major change that looks like you have “had work done,” fillers will make you look more rested, less stern, more youthful. Fillers vary by what they are made out of, how long they last, and cost. At Serenity Medical Spa we offer a wide variety of fillers that last from as little as 6 months to as much as 2 to 3 years!
If you are planning on a dermal filler procedure, there are some things you can do to prepare so that your risk of bruising is decreased. For one week prior to your appointment, stop all aspirin or aspirin products such as Motrin, Advil and Alleve. Also stop fish oil, vitamin E, and Gingko. Three days prior to your procedure, start taking some Arnica Montana Pellets, five a day under your tongue. Then the morning of your procedure, eat some fresh pineapple and or kiwi. All of these measures will reduce your risk of bruising significantly. Continue reading Time to Fill Up!

The Cell Membrane-Doorway to your DNA

“Fish Oil helped save our son” was the story on CNN on Oct 22, 2012. Early morning news told of the story of a 17 year old man who was severely injured in a car crash. He was hospitalized and in a coma for 10 days when his father reached out for help. A doctor friend proposed using fish oil to treat his traumatic brain injury. The doctor relayed a prior case from 2006 where high dose fish oil was used to normalize neurologic function. This was the case of a 26 year old man who had suffered multiple injuries including carbon monoxide induced brain damage after being trapped in a mine for 41 hours. High dose fish oil was used in both cases – 10 times the normal dose was added via feeding tube. In both cases, the men came out of the coma much faster than they would have had the fish oil not been given. And there was speculation they might not have recovered from the coma without it. Both had a nearly complete recovery which amazed the families and doctors alike. It appears that the high dose fish oil had significant anti-inflammatory actions. Now, the Section on Nutritional Neurosciences at the NIH plans Continue reading The Cell Membrane-Doorway to your DNA

RADIOFREQUENCY: A Revolutionary Modality in the Treatment of Painful Conditions
and in Body Regeneration and Rejuvenation
Do not be afraid of pain treatment. You do not need to suffer and live with pain. You do not need to be unhappy because your body is getting mature…
Surgery should be the last resort. Most painful conditions are treated conservatively with a nonsurgical
approach. In addition to medications, physical modalities (ultrasound, TENS, massage, exercise) and injection techniques RADIOFREQUENCY is a revolutionary technology which incapacitates the conduction of pain and also treats cellulite, tightens the subcutaneous tissue and erases scars and wrinkles.

Yes, the same energy, but applied with different frequency and intensity, is used both in the treatment of pain and in correcting relaxed skin and subcutatenous tissue. Radiofrequency ablation of the median branch sensory nerve “turns off” a small nerve which conducts pain. It is used for effective treatment of pain with long lasting results. The outcomes are amazing: years of pain relief, lowering or eliminating the need for pain medications. Skin tightening, nonsurgical face lift and smoothing of Continue reading Nonsurgical Treatment of Painful Conditions and Body Rejuvenation

The Pertussis Vaccine: Who Should Get it and Why

Carolyn Havens Niemann, MSN, CNM

by Carolyn Havens Niemann, MSN, CNM
Pertussis: what is it, and why have we been hearing about it in the news? The next time you go for your annual gynecologic checkup or for your primary care physical, your practitioner may offer you the TDaP vaccine for the prevention of pertussis. Pertussis is commonly called whooping cough, and while adults are not typically at risk for serious illness from pertussis, the infection can be fatal for infants and young children. Until a few years ago, therefore, vaccination strategies focused on immunizing those most at
risk; in childhood the combination vaccine containing diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis was given but in adulthood further boosters were given with only the diphtheria and tetanus components. Between 2000 and
2010, however, rates of pertussis increased nearly fourfold, from 7,867 cases to 27,550 (source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).
In response to this increase, the CDC now recommends that all adults under age 65 receive the booster containing pertussis with their next tetanus/diphtheria vaccine, and every 10 years thereafter. Rather than
focusing on vaccinating only those at risk, this new strategy involves eliminating adults as carriers of pertussis in the community via the public health concept of “herd immunity.” The recommendation applies to pregnant women, as well. The CDC recommends that pregnant women who have not been previously vaccinated with TDaP receive a dose of the Continue reading The Pertussis Vaccine: Who Should Get it and Why

Healthy Skin for Life

Dr. Jerry Bagel, M.D., Medical Director of Windsor Dermatology

Healthy skin in our mature years is a direct result of how we care for our skin when we are younger. Maintaining healthy skin care is like a well-planned retirement—it takes an early start and a life-long regimen to achieve it.

The cellular and hormonal composition of our skin and its needs for healthy care evolve over time. Being aware of and responding to skin care needs over the course of our lives ensures that we look our best no
matter what age we are.

Children’s skin

The skin of most children has a beautiful smooth appearance. All skin functions are very active and the skin is well hydrated. By and large, children’s skin is the healthiest it will ever be.
Children spend a lot of time playing outside. This often leads to massive exposure to the sun and can be the beginning of long-term consequences. It is vital to protect children’s skin against the sun, and particularly against sunburn, to Continue reading Healthy Skin for Life

What to Wear for the Holidays

With the flurry of invitations, deciding what to wear to the Holiday party could be the last priority on your list this time of year. One rule of thumb that I always follow, no matter the occasion, is to buy it when you see it. If you are out casually shopping in early November and you see a great blouse or dress that will work for the Holiday season, purchase it right then and there. Chances are if you skip over that piece, and think you will buy it at a later date, it won’t be there when you return. Continue reading What to Wear for the Holidays

Acupuncture and Cancer: A Holistic Approach to Ease Discomfort

Acupuncture is the use of thin needles inserted at various areas of the body to treat numerous conditions. The needles are usually left in anywhere from 20-60 minutes. The treatment is pain free. Both the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society report acupuncture may be effective as an adjunct therapy for the treatment of side effects associated with Chemotherapy. Acupuncture is not used to treat cancer but rather as an aid to ease the side effects of cancer treatment. Continue reading Acupuncture and Cancer: A Holistic Approach to Ease Discomfort
