I Want In-Home Care…But, How Do I Choose What Type Is Right For Me?

Nora de Cárdenas, J.D.

Nora de Cárdenas, J.D.

Do you or someone in your family need help with daily tasks like meal preparation, dressing or running errands?  Do you or your loved one need skilled nursing care to help recuperate after being discharged from a hospital or a rehab? More than two-thirds of all older adults who need help with everyday tasks live at home, including more than 70% of those with Alzheimer’s disease.1  Many turn to in-home care as a positive alternative to institutional care. To those who have never dealt with this type of care, it can all seem very confusing.  For example, the terms “Home Care” and “Home Health Care” are often used  interchangeably when, in reality, they provide very different services.  Confused on  what professional caregiving option best fits your family’s needs?  Consider this your introduction to professional in-home caregiving! Bone Health – Prevention Of Osteoporosis (Part 2)

Dr. Kate Thomsen and Silky

Dr. Kate Thomsen and Silky

In the last issue, I discussed how bone is formed and broken down.  During the early menopausal years, women get screened for bone loss using a DEXA scan.  This is a non-invasive test.  While the patient is lying down, a type of X-ray is taken of the lower spine, hip and sometimes the wrist.  Different types of bone are found at these sites.  Bone density loss can be higher at one type of bone than another – it will vary in each individual.  A computer averages the density of the bone at various sites and computes “T scores.”  These T score values will be compared to a bell shaped curve of T scores of premenopausal women.  In menopausal women, a T score of -1 or higher is “normal.”  A T score of -1 to -2.5 indicates osteopenia (weakening bone).  A T score of -2.5 or lower indicates osteoporosis. A Question That I Am Asked Daily Is…

Karen Winterfield-Dodds, D.M.D.

Karen Winterfield-Dodds, D.M.D.

A question that I am asked daily is “Am I a candidate to have my teeth bleached?”  A thorough examination of all teeth, roots and gums should be completed by your dentist prior to bleaching.  Patients with healthy unrestored teeth are the best candidates.  Existing crowns and bonded fillings will not bleach in the process.  Surface stains caused by coffee, tea, red wine and smoking will be improved by bleaching.  Teeth that are a dark shade due to internal causes such as tetracycline or fluorosis will not give as good results.  Patients with sensitive, worn teeth or periodontal disease are not good candidates either. You Are Not Who You Were, Only Older

Evelyn Kolinsky

Evelyn Kolinsky

I turned 50 this past December, and guess what? My life isn’t over. I didn’t slide down that slippery slope of aging I kept hearing about. If anything, the most amazing thing happened. I woke up. I have morphed into my authentic self like a butterfly emerging from its cocoon. I was as surprised as anyone to experience this awakening, since I believed much of the rhetoric that abounds about decline, depression, and despair being hallmarks of aging.  I felt that angst in my 30’s, but throughout my 40’s and marching into a new decade I began to feel a different mantra struggling to the surface. This mantra said “You are not who you were, only older.” It wasn’t until I turned the corner on 50, however, that I let that mantra break free with all the strength of a gale force wind. Life Coaching: An Empowering Experience

Dolores DeGiacomo, MA – Empowerment and Life Coach

Dolores DeGiacomo, MA – Empowerment and Life Coach

I am fortunate to have a close relationship with the children of a friend, whom I’ve known for 25 years.  His 16 year old son likes to tell his friends that he has his own life coach.  They don’t really know what it means, but when he says it, he makes it sound cool.  They are envious and they want one too.  When I first decided to become a life coach, I had to figure out how to explain this to my friends, family, new acquaintances, etc.  I was instructed to develop my “elevator speech.”  I have not yet mastered this glorious 30 seconds of self promotion, but I’m getting there. Sterling Medical Supports Diabetic Awareness

sterlinglogoIt’s school time again! Time to turn our focus from swimming lessons and day camp to soccer practice and homework. While our families settle into their new routines, busy moms’ daily schedules continue to fill up with more and more to-do’s.  Since many of us now care for, or coordinate care for, our ill or aging parents, our to-do list just seems never ending.  Not to mention all of those parents – and sons and daughters, husbands and wives – who are affected by diabetes in this country. The stress can build up as we try to accomplish every task to keep our families healthy and happy! Continue reading Sterling Medical Supports Diabetic Awareness
