Devoting Her Life to Making Little Miracles Come True

Dr. Susan Treiser, M.D., Ph.D

Dr. Susan Treiser, M.D., Ph.D

Susan Treiser, co-founder and co-director of IVF New Jersey, is one of the few female board-certified Reproductive Endocrinologists in her field.  A native of Canada, Susan attended Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C., where she obtained both a PhD in pharmacology and her medical degree.

Raised in Montreal, and the daughter of Holocaust survivors, Susan’s perspective on life and her own future were colored by her parents’ history.  As young teenagers, her parents were torn from their homes in Czechoslovakia and put in concentration camps.  Her mother, Fay, lost her parents and a brother, and her father, Bernard Lebovic lost his mother.   Fay and Bernard survived the concentration camp and, when released, returned to their village.  In an odd set of circumstances, Fay’s eldest brother married Bernard’s eldest sister.  “Eventually three from one family married three from the other,” Treiser says.  “They all took care of each other.”

2009 NJ Governor’s Conference for Women

njgovlogoThe theme of the NJ Governor’s Conference for Women on May 12 in Atlantic City is “Shaping the Future,” and it comes at a time when the future has never been brighter for American women.

Women like Hillary Clinton, who left 18 million cracks in the proverbial glass ceiling in her run for the Democratic presidential nomination; Sarah Palin, the first woman on a Republican presidential ticket; and New Jersey’s own Lisa Jackson, the first African-American woman nominated to head the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, proved women in positions of importance are here to stay. Put another way, the term “Year of the Woman” is redundant since 2008 has shown women will play leading roles in every year moving forward. Continue reading 2009 NJ Governor’s Conference for Women

Botox News

Dr. Sharon Gertzman

Dr. Sharon Gertzman

It always amazes me how the medical community expands the use of products that began with very limited use. For Instance, a machine that was developed and used only for separating neurons in a surgical procedure, can now be used to remove moles without bleeding or scarring. A procedure that was developed for treatment of facial skin cancer is now used to treat sun damage, cure acne, and give skin a more youthful appearance.

When Botox cosmetic was first introduced to the medical aesthetic community, it was approved and used only for the frown lines between the brows. Doctors then experimented with it on the forehead and crow’s feet but it was always considered a treatment for the upper face only. Any area below the nose was thought to be a danger zone. But of course we continued to experiment and now realize that so much can be done, safely, with Botox in the lower face. It can be used to stop the drag on the corners of the mouth that create the appearance of an eternal frown. It can stop the down turn of the tip of the nose that comes with age. It can stop the “golf ball” appearance of the chin that also comes with age. Continue reading Botox News

The Story of National Women’s History Month

victorianwomenThe Beginning
As recently as the 1970’s, women’s history was virtually an unknown topic in the K-12 curriculum or in general public consciousness. To address this situation, the Education Task Force of the Sonoma County (California) Commission on the Status of Women initiated a “Women’s History Week” celebration for 1978. We chose the week of March 8 to make International Women’s Day the focal point of the observance. The activities that were held met with enthusiastic response, and within a few years dozens of schools planned special programs for Women’s History Week. Over one-hundred community women participated in the Community Resource Women Project, an annual “Real Woman” Essay Contest which drew hundreds of entries, and we were staging a marvelous annual parade and program in downtown Santa Rosa, California. Tea Party Grows Into Foundation Funds Fight Ovarian Cancer

victorianwomanThe 3rd annual Teal Tea will be held May 3, at the Trenton Marriott, Lafayette Yard. Tickets are $50 per person and proceeds go to help find a cure and raise awareness of ovarian cancer. The Tea includes individual competitions for the most beautifully decorated tea table, a best hat parade, and music by Thursday Night Jazz and members of the Hun School Chamber Orchestra. To purchase tickets, contact Amy Cellini, acellini@ets.org or Jean Shipos, 215-295-4315.

The Teal Tea Foundation is also looking for volunteer table captains interested in decorating a tea table.  Anyone interested in decorating a table for the fund-raiser, should contact Shipos or visit www.tealtea.com for more information.

“A simple tea party held the first Sunday every May to raise funds for ovarian cancer awareness for the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC) has blossomed into a full-fledged 501(c) (3) foundation – The Teal Tea Foundation.,” says Shipos, Teal Tea Foundation President.

After holding Teal Tea parties for two years with the support of Educational Testing Service (ETS), Princeton, NJ, they have formed an Executive Committee and Advisory Board to oversee their work as a foundation. Support for the organization includes new advisory board members: The Honorable John Bencivengo, Mayor of Hamilton Township;

Anne Gale, Retired Vice President and Corporate Secretary, Educational Testing Service; Keith McWhirk, Esquire, Mandracchia & McWhirk, LLC; The Honorable Douglas Palmer, Mayor of Trenton; Dr. Lorna Rodriguez, Chief of Oncology/Gynecology, The Cancer Institute of New Jersey; and Nancy Sherlock, President Morrisville Borough Council.

“By moving into a recognized Foundation, we can continue to support numerous efforts to promote awareness of and the fight against, ovarian cancer,” Shipos says.” As always, our primary goal with holding the Teal Tea is to recognize those who are currently fighting this insidious disease and to remember those who have lost the battle.”
