Resolutions for Foodies

Resolutions for Foodies

By Jo Ann Povia of GardenStateOnAPlate.com

It’s that time of year again. Health club memberships surge and diet books fly off the shelves as holiday indulgences have us committing to resolutions of losing pounds and running half-marathons.  While we admit that these are worthy goals, we have decided to create our own list of resolutions that require a little less willpower. In fact, it’s more like a 2012 “to do” list forMercerCountyfoodies than a set of resolutions. We start with a health-oriented resolution, but the bulk of our suggestions fall squarely into the “indulgence” category. Continue reading Resolutions for Foodies

Making Prudent Decisions Under Financial Stress

Paul Maselli photo

The continued success of a struggling business depends on the business owner’s ability to make prudent decisions under financial stress.  In 25 years of representing struggling businesses (and unpaid lenders), I have witnessed many bad business decisions.

A “struggling business” is one that has had past success in timely paying payroll, taxes, rent and other operating expenses, but finds itself in a situation where it is no longer selling enough products or services on a monthly basis to meet its monthly expenses.

The worst decision a business owner can make is to not pay taxes.  Delaying the payment of payroll withholding and employment taxes, sales taxes, etc. can be fatal to both the business and the business owner.  The government has little flexibility in negotiating payment plans or reducing the tax debt,  and strong collection powers.  Taxes are the first priority.

It is foolhardy to not pay rent if there is no place else to run the business.  A landlord has quick access to the courts to obtain an eviction which will effectively terminate the business. Continue reading Making Prudent Decisions Under Financial Stress

Social Media Plan 2012

Jackie Berman

The year 2012 will provide a. Social Media is now helping businesses define as well as deliver key business objectives. In today’s age where social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter have managed to beat Google in popularity, social presence is a crucial component of any business’ online strategy.

Social Media not only helps a business reach out to newer audiences, it also helps develop a framework that allows it to be more adaptable to changing customer requirements or market trends. A report from Boston Consulting Group indicates that social media has overtaken eCommerce when it comes to having an online presence for businesses.

Facebook has gained massive traction amongst small businesses this year and it’s expected to further step up the ante with new business-friendly profile changes and email integration via Social Inbox. Continue reading Social Media Plan 2012

I Just Bought a New Puppy… Now What Do I Do???

A new puppy is fidgety, stubborn, unruly, nosy, noisy, chewing on everything, and yappy. However, inside every unmanageable puppy is a puppy waiting to hop into its adult dog suit and become a regular member of your family. When you first buy a puppy, name it! Chances are good that the first night your puppy is in its new home, both of you will get very little sleep. You can hardly blame your dog for having difficulty sleeping.

Dogs are creatures of habit and routine. He/she will miss its mother and litter mates and your puppy will feel uncomfortable in its new surroundings. He/she will feel this way until they form a bond with you, this will not take very long! Like a young child, your puppy has little control of their emotions, even though it might cry in the middle of the night. Scolding him/her will only make them fear you even more. If your puppy cries for you to come to them during the first few nights, your constant appearance will comfort him or her. It is very important for your puppy to have a safe place to sleep, free from drafts and harm. Continue reading I Just Bought a New Puppy… Now What Do I Do???

Why can’t we get pregnant?

Dr. Seth Derman

The New Year is a time for making resolutions. For many couples, that that resolution is to grow their family, whether that means trying for their first child or adding a second or third child to the family.  Unfortunately, for many couples, despite these yearnings, the baby of their dreams does not come so easily.

If you or someone close to you is having trouble getting pregnant, the first thing to realize is that you are not alone. It is estimated that 1 in 5 couples of reproductive age suffers from infertility. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine defines infertility has the inability to conceive after a year of unprotected intercourse.

The next thing to understand is that time in not always on your side. While most women will conceive on their own given enough time, infertility treatments are almost always more successful in younger women. For that reason, we usually recommend that women under 35 with regular cycles wait a year, and that women over 35 or those with irregular periods, come in for evaluation after only 6 months. Nutritional Evaluation

An Example of Functional Medicine Testing

Dr. Kate Thomsen and Silky

How do you know if you are living a healthy lifestyle?  Functional medicine tests look at how cells and organs are functioning, coping, and adapting to your lifestyle over time or in response to stressors.  We focus on restoring balance to the body’s systems by adjusting the environmental inputs that nurture or impair them – hoping to divert disease.  One of our favorite tools that helps us find and correct imbalances is a Nutrition Evaluation, using fasting blood and urine samples.  This is a very comprehensive test that evaluates: one’s ability to produce cell energy, protein status, vitamin and mineral sufficiency or deficiency, essential fatty acid balance (omega 3, 6, 9…), toxic exposure and, most importantly, oxidative stress.  These parameters are affected by your genes, your current “conditions”, your lifestyle (diet) and your supplements.  We ask you to stop all supplements for 4 days and eat your regular diet to see if what you are offering your body (with its unique genes and conditions) is creating healthy and balanced systems.
